Massachusetts State Police Trooper Discovers Deceased Woman Following Encampment Fire

MILLBURY — An outdoor fire that claimed a woman’s life in Millbury on Saturday night is currently under investigation, according to Millbury Fire Chief Steven M. Kosiba, Millbury Police Chief Brian S. Lewos, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine, and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Shortly after 8:15 p.m., a Massachusetts State Police trooper responded to a small brush fire near the Blackstone River Bikeway, close to Route 146. Upon arrival, the trooper found the victim in an encampment believed to be the origin of the fire. He promptly notified the Millbury Fire Department, which extinguished the flames, as well as the Millbury Police Department.

The victim, an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a formal identification and determine the cause and manner of her death.

The path remains open to the public, and the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is being conducted by the Millbury Fire Department, Millbury Police, and State Police associated with the offices of the State Fire Marshal and Worcester District Attorney.

While the exact cause of the fire has not yet been established, fire officials pointed out that Massachusetts was under a Red Flag warning yesterday, indicating that outdoor fires could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. The state continues to face elevated fire risks today.
