Matilde Lorenzi Training Accident: Nineteen-year-old Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi has tragically passed away following a training accident in northern Italy, leaving the alpine skiing community in deep mourning.
“We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi,” expressed the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) in a statement confirming her death on Tuesday.
Lorenzi, a promising talent in Italian skiing and a member of the Italian Army’s sports branch, suffered a critical head injury during training on the Schnalstaler glacier in Val Senales on Monday. After a hard fall on the piste, she received immediate first aid and was airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano. Despite all medical efforts, Lorenzi succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday morning. Medical personnel described her condition as “very serious” from the outset.
A rising star in the sport, Lorenzi had just won Italy’s national Super-G title in March, marking her as one of the country’s most promising young athletes. She was weeks away from celebrating her 20th birthday on November 15.
The FIS, alongside Italian Ski Federation President Flavio Roda, joins Lorenzi’s family, teammates, and coaches in honoring her life and achievements. Her passion, dedication, and exceptional talent will be deeply missed by the entire Italian skiing community, who mourns the loss of a gifted skier taken far too soon.
