Melanie Cal has been identified as the mother of one killed in the Stann Creek Highway crash

Over the weekend, a series of highway accidents resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, including 22-year-old Melanie Cal. The fatal incident occurred early Friday morning on the main road in the village of Maya Mopan, Stann Creek District.

Cal, a mother of one, was traveling in a Nissan double cab van driven by 27-year-old Trisha Choc. Reports indicate that Choc lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn multiple times before coming to rest on the roadside. Cal was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

The other occupants of the vehicle, including Choc, 22-year-old Jocelyn Sanchez, and 16-year-old Sandra Coc, were transported to Southern Regional Hospital for medical treatment. While their conditions have not been disclosed, it is understood that they sustained injuries in the collision.

Raymundo Peck, the Alcalde of Maya Mopan, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. “It’s incredibly painful to speak about this situation,” Peck said. “Melanie was a very promising young woman, well-known and loved by the villagers. Her family is kind and respected, and this is a significant loss for the community.”

Peck described the scene as heartbreaking, with Cal’s body lying on the ground amid grieving family members and villagers. He voiced disappointment and confusion over how such an accident could occur on what is usually a straightforward stretch of road.

The group was en route to Georgetown village on business when the accident occurred. The incident has left the community in mourning and has raised concerns about road safety and the circumstances leading to the crash.
