KENTUCKY SHERIFF ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AND KILLING A JUDGE

The sheriff charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a rural Kentucky judge in his courthouse chambers was previously accused in a federal lawsuit of failing to investigate claims that one of his deputies sexually abused a woman in the same judge’s chambers.

Preliminary reports suggest that Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines shot District Judge Kevin Mullins multiple times on Thursday after an argument inside the courthouse. Mullins, who had served as a judge for 15 years, died at the scene, and Stines surrendered without incident. The nature of the argument has not yet been disclosed.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that his office will work with a local commonwealth’s attorney as special prosecutors in the criminal case. According to state police, Mullins, 54, was shot multiple times, and Stines, 43, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Speculation about the motive has circulated widely, with some rumors on social media alleging that the judge had committed a sexual offense involving the sheriff’s daughter. However, there is no confirmed evidence to support these claims at this time. As the case progresses and Stines retains legal representation, further details about the motive may emerge.
