Franz Hofer, mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau, has been identified as a victim in a deadly shooting spree linked to allegations of “unhuntsmanlike” conduct. Following accusations of such behavior, a hunter allegedly launched an attack that left Hofer and another man dead, while injuring a third.

Just before 8:30 a.m. local time, emergency services were alerted to gunfire in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria, confirming the tragic death of Hofer, the mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau.

Residents have been instructed to remain indoors while Austrian authorities pursue the gunman, believed to be armed and highly dangerous. In response, Austria has deployed its elite special forces unit, EKO Cobra, to assist in the search. Mayor Hofer was found fatally shot in Altenfelden, approximately 500 meters from a federal highway.

Local media reports indicate that Hofer, who had served as Kirchberg’s mayor since 2008 and was a hunting director, had recently filed a complaint against the suspect for “unhuntsmanlike actions.” Hofer, who led the village of about 1,000 residents, was planning to retire soon. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the tragic incident.
