A tragic incident occurred Tuesday night as a male student at the University of California, Berkeley, passed away. UC Berkeley Police and EMS responded to a report of a possible jumper at Residence Hall Unit 3.
The student, who has only been identified as a UC Berkeley attendee, reportedly jumped from the fourth floor of the parking structure near the Durant Avenue residence hall. Despite CPR efforts from responding officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed there was no foul play involved in the student’s death.
His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. UC Berkeley officials have urged students to reach out for support if they are struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts. In response to the incident, a police cordon was set up around the parking area.
The victim, described as a young male, was found with injuries consistent with a fall. “Life-saving measures were administered, but he was declared deceased at the scene,” reported an EMS responder.
For support, students are encouraged to contact UHS Mental Health Services at (510) 642-9494, with urgent drop-in counseling available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
