Kai Thompson Surfing Accident & Death: On October 10, 2024, reports surfaced that Kai Thompson had been involved in a severe accident, leading his family and friends to establish a GoFundMe page titled “KaiThompson_1MoreWave” to help support Kai and his family during this difficult time.
GoFundMe Statement
“Kai is currently in the ICU at СНО, battling a grade 4 tear to both his liver and kidney, resulting in internal bleeding, which remains the most critical concern. Kai also sustained severe facial injuries, including lacerations to his face, mouth, and tongue, which have been stitched, along with a broken nose requiring surgery in the coming days. He’s suffering from bruised ribs, a broken pelvis, and a serious concussion, though these injuries have taken a backseat in our focus due to the internal bleeding.
We initially refrained from posting on social media due to the fluid nature of the situation. However, we’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and messages, and we know there are so many who care deeply for Kai. The accident happened just two streets away from our home as he headed out to surf on Saturday morning.
Our primary hope is to rally as much positive energy, thoughts, and prayers as possible for Kai. Last night, he made it through without needing a transfusion or emergency surgery. Though the bleeding persists, it is under control, and he is closely monitored. Although Kai’s in significant pain and struggling to communicate, we’re grateful there’s no brain trauma.

At present, we’re all holding our breath, as the surgeon has put it, and hoping the bleeding stays managed. Thank you to everyone who has reached out; it means the world to us. Please feel free to leave a positive message, and I’ll share each one with Kai when he’s ready.”
Update on October 17
Kai’s family shared a hopeful update: “We are beyond grateful to have Kai home and beginning his recovery as an outpatient. He’s made remarkable progress in recent days. Today, he underwent another CT scan and even enjoyed a quick lunch at Sessions. Tomorrow, we meet with the trauma team to evaluate the healing of his liver and kidney—fingers crossed for good news. We are so thankful for all the love and support.”
