Two people were killed in a Paterson fire early Friday, Sept. 20, authorities reported.

A 28-year-old man and a 69-year-old man were able to escape, but the bodies of two other victims were discovered inside the residence at 71 North 7th Street shortly after 2:30 a.m., according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Paterson Police Department Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi, and Paterson Fire Chief Alex Alicea.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy flames on both the first and second floors of the wood-frame home, with the fire rapidly spreading, the Paterson Fire Department said. Firefighters managed to rescue one victim and one animal, both of whom were handed over to EMS.
